Leica - Das Werkzeug für Kenner und Könner

The first Leica M-camera was introduced in 1954 and the first models M3 and M2 soon became the primary tool for legendary photographers who also gave the camera it's nickname Das Werkzeug which is German for The Tool. 


A Leica M is a tool that requires it's photographer. To put the camera in automatic mode and hope that the picture will be good is a little bit risky and will certainly give you photos that are unusable. To make good use a Leica M you first have to understand the relationship between aperture and shutter speed and know how to read the light. 


There's a certain amount of mythos surrounding the Leica M. And that is not surprising since the hand-made German rangefinder camera has been the first hand choice of many legendary documentary photographers. Many famous photographies has been taken with a Leica. That's because a Leica is a excellent tool that can deliver photographs of the highest class in the hands of the right photographer. Even if a brand new Leica M is quite expensive tool today it still a tool for professionals since it demands expertise and knowledge of a keen photographer to master it. 


Previously I have been working with big and bulky professional cameras from Canon and Nikon, they are also excellent tools for professional photographers. But no other camera says that I'm serious about photography like a Leica. But I didn't choose Leica because of it's mythos. I choosed it because I prefer to work with rangefinder cameras. And I also prefer cameras with a minimalistic feel that are not filled with buttons, levers and knobs that confuses me.


I have used my good old Leica M8 on many assignments, in desert conditions in Egypt, festivals with high humidity and at high risk demonstrations. I have used it as my every day camera in winter conditions and in summertime at the beach. The good old Leica always delivers good images and I know that I always can count on it. Even if there's never models around I prefer my M8 and I will make good use of it as long as it last.





Last but not least, remember that a camera is only a tool, it's your ability to see and catch the fast moving moments of times that matters. You can even use a cell-phone or a hefty Canikon for that purpose, but according to me it's far more fun to catch the moments with a good old range-finder camera.

Go Home - en musikvideo om vänskap

Sången Go Home av Singer-songwritern Johan Leidefors handlar om Georgian, en romsk man i 30-års åldern. På grund av arbetslöshet sökte han sig till Sverige i desperat jakt efter ett jobb för att kunna försörja sina barn hemma i Rumänien. Trots många försök fick han inte tag på något arbete och nödgades att tigga för att få ihop pengar.

Johan Leidefors och dokumentärfotografen Mikael Good har på var sitt håll lärt känna Georgian och har engagerat sig i hans livsöde. De delar en förhoppning om att på något sätt kunna hjälpa Georgian och hans familj. Nu har de gjort ett bildspel med Johans musik som illustrerats med Mikael Goods bilder på Georgian och hans rumänska vänner.

Muhammad's letter of protection to a Christian Monastery

Mount Horeb or Mount Sinai as it also is called is the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God which you can read about in Exodus 20:1-17. Moses is considered to be a important Prophet for all the three Religions and the place is sacred to the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. 



Tens of thousands of pilgrims visited the summit of mount Horeb to worship God, Allah or Yahweh and to see the marvelous view and sunrise from the top. There is an Greek Orthodox Chapel as well as a small Mosque on the summit of mount Horeb. Thousands of tourists who belong to other religions or are non believers also visited mount Horeb to see the sunrise and to feel the wings of history surrounding the mountain.



Saint Catherine's Monastery and mount Horeb are located in an area of the Sinai peninsula which is controlled by a terrorist organization that has close bonds with the Islamic state (IS). Tourists are strongly recommended to stay out of the area since the Egyptian regime can't guarantee for their security. There's a immediate risk of being kidnapped or even worse There's been a drastic drop of tourist in the area during the last years. Bedouins and native Egyptians that was dependent on tourism to get an income has lost that possibility. They now have to struggle hard to provide for their children.



There are not yet confirmed rumors that the monks at the Monastery are forced to pay the Islamic jizya tax, which is applied to non-Muslims in areas controlled by IS or their collaborators. What is known is that the monks recently asked for financial aid and that is something that is very rare since they live their lifes in seclusion.



Some of Christianities most priceless treasures are kept inside the Monastery. The collection of rare books and manuscripts in Greek, Arabic, Syrian, Georgian and Slavonic can easy compete with the collection in the Vatican. It also contains a unique collection of more than 2000 icons from 1500 years. And what is said to be the burning bush that God used when he spoke with Moses.



Saint Catherine monastery was completed in 557. It has not been without enemies since then, but it has never been conquered. The tradition says that earlier in his career Prophet Muhammed used to stay at the monastery when he travelled with caravans on his way from Egypt to Arabia. In 628 travelled a delegation from Saint Catherine's to Prophet Muhammed and made a request for his protection of the Monastery. Muhammed issued a letter of protection for the monastery and stamped the document with the imprint of his hand, since he couldn't read or write. The original letter of protection are kept in an museum in Istanbul, and a copy of it is on display in the monastery's museum. Even if muslims has respected the letter of protection from Muhammed through centuries. The monks don't rely that IS will respect it. They are afraid that IS will eventually attack and plunder the Monastery and destroy or scatter all the priceless books, icons and artifacts.

Leica är ett säkert kort för att boosta besöksstatistiken

En gyllene regel för att få många läsare på Fotosidan är att skriva om Leica och gärna använda varumärket i rubriken till blogginlägget. Oavsett vad man än tycker om Leica har företaget en utsökt förmåga att röra upp debatter och ibland hettar känslorna till.



Jag bryr mig inte så mycket om varumärken, jag använder kameror som jag trivs med och jag skriver om det jag känner för utan att bry mig speciellt mycket om att jag får många läsare eller inte. Missförstå mig rätt jag tycker det är kul att just du läser min blogg och det är kul att jag kan bibehålla intresset för min blogg hos mina läsare efter alla dessa år som bloggare.



Men det är inte artiklar om Leica eller andra kameror som har lockat mest läsare till min blogg. Artiklarna som har haft flest läsare är mina socialreportage från Lettland och Ryssland. Även mina reportage om romernas och rudarernas situation har nått en stor skara läsare. För mig är bloggen ett forum där jag kan bjuda mina läsare på merläsning och visa fler bilder än i tryckt media. Det har även hänt att jag har lagt upp genomarbetade reportage som av olika anledningar inte har kommit med i någon tidning direkt i min blogg.



Jag är tacksam för att jag har fått möjligheten att träffa många starka människor runt om i världen och göra reportage om dem. Alla möten med kämpande människor som jag har haft genom åren har gett mig ett större perspektiv på tillvaron och gjort mig mer förnöjsam med det som jag har.



Som ni säkert känner till har jag fått en hel del artiklar och bilder publicerade de senaste tio åren och mina bilder från Rumänien har nått en mångmiljonpublik. Men trots framgången vårdar jag min blogg ömt. Oavsett om jag har en eller flera miljoner läsare kommer jag att fortsätta att skriva artiklar och ladda upp bilder i bloggen så länge som jag tycker att det är kul. Jag är medveten om att jag kanske inte är så bra på att svara på kommentarer. Men jag är självklart mycket tacksam för alla kommentarer och glada tillrop som jag får från mina läsare!
